Bottled lightning

As Mark Twain famously remarked, the difference between the not quite right word and the right word is huge:

The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter—it’s the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.

This site tries to memorialize fine examples of good writing from the noble though dwindling ranks of excellent print newspaper and magazine writers, as well as some exemplary authors, before they disappear altogether in an age of vanishing literacy, where the Internet submerges their accomplishment in its gigantic babbling “lulz” (Internet shorthand for crowd hilarity).

Let us celebrate the art of the golden pen before we “loose” it (to quote the currently obnoxious but apparently unstoppable creeping spelling change relentlessly fostered as a new coinage by the ignorance of commenters and even some writers on the Web who should know better the spelling they were taught in kindergarten).
